Look. Just look at this guy's face? What is wrong with his face?!

He looks like he is un-evolving before my very eyes, for fucks sake! His brow more ridged with every blink of disbelief! With every sobering slap to my own face, his stare becomes more and more vacant until i can actually see a talking caveman. As much as he struggles with forming simple sentences, a real fucking talking caveman. I am actually looking into the ancient eyes of a real-life, fucking talking caveman back from the fucking dead to destroy our brains with banality. Incredible. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy was 7 foot tall with big hairy arms when he was 10 years old. Roaming around the playground, smashing up the place and screaming like a giant baby, wondering why he was 5 foot taller than all the other kids, needing to be air-lifted into his classroom like some blubbering and hopeless beached whale. Befriending a similiarly rejected asian child with cerebral palsy and going on crappy adventures through the drains. That sort of thing.

Anyway, ahem, that inane, chirpy, winsome grin, dazed, dribbling and pointlessly optimistic as he introduces us (he has to point as his shit sign at the start of every fucking video) towards yet another of his turgid, half-baked musical pies can only mean one thing, it is none other than "Last Night From Glasgow", a series of hilarious "live", mostly acoustic performances spammed out to the public (what did we do wrong?!) to keep our hopes up and our dreams alive. Lovingly shot on his shit-poor digital camera's internal mic (optimum enjoyment, folks, lap it up), set to the quaint, scenic backdrop of his dank, piss-stained bedroom (where he has no doubt wanked his twenties away, weeping into his cornflakes whilst carving the cast of Friends out of mouldy onions to keep himself sane), you can see that, right from the start, Manc_ill_Kid (twat) has absolutely no shame in embarrassing himself and Glaswegians everywhere with his overwhelmingly spack-tarded opinion of what constitutes an enjoyable musical experience.

Spurred on by the early success of the sound abortion that is Sandi Thom, of all people, this poor sod, however, doesn't appear to know what "keys" are, what "natural talent" is, what "nightmarish atonality" means and keeps friends with some of the most unconvincing lunks you could ever clap your eyes on. Where the fuck did he find these creepy, creepy losers?! He also quite clearly comments annonymously, yet favourably on his own performances (sad) and is under the illusion that a few hundred views (most of them his own - own up you git) justifies the "phenomenom" tag he has attributed himself. Gimp.

As for the lunks, take this recent video from Thee Moths, for example. This odd little lumpy sadsack's cover of Cameo's classic Word Up is straight out of your darkest nightmares with it's mind-numbing sloppiness and cringeworthy chorus, sang with about as much conviction as you would expect from a shaved orangutan with down's syndrome, not to mention mutton chops your fat dad could ski down. Wobbling around like a pregnant walrus. I found myself shielding my eyes from the horror as his hands fumbled over his shite little guitar, making it sick up his shredded, clumsy gumph, as the voices deep within his mind encouraged him to just keep moaning, keep on weeping it out until the last crumbs of pain wash over all of us. But it never does, does it? It's just one horrible, perpetually looped delusion. Deeply unsettling, not to mention deeply untalented. I can see him at the end of my bed at night. The sound doesn't stop. The dirt wont wash off. HELP ME KEVIN! NOOOOOOOO!

Next up we have Scunner. I swear this has to be seen to be believed. The guitarist is, quite simply, terrifying. Those wee, peephole eyes and that cold, emotionless, otherworldy expression. If i ever met this man in real life (if he even exists and isn't just scary nightmares coming out of my computer), i'd swear to the sweetest walnut of all that i was about to be molested to death. Horrible. That's not the worst part though, check the absolute nick of the singer as he prances around like Mr Claypole from Rent-A-Ghost. You think you can just dress up like a gay Chewbacca, act like an escapee from Rent and you're suddenly a charismatic frontman? I don't think so, pal. For a start, what are you even saying?! All i can hear over and over is the word "gadzooks" and even perhaps the odd "Bob's your uncle" in there somewhere too. Get lost, weirdo.

This poisonous little runt looks like a 'Brewer's Droop'. Images Of Mathematicians On Postage Stamps isn't music; It's Alan's attempt at proving to the office that he actually is, regardless of how they treat him everyday at work, a bodacious dude with awesome skills. Look boss! Look what i made! Don't call me "Shitty Phil Mitchell" anymore, i'm an actual rocker with a music video and a friend! Funny, because he looks just like the sort of pointless little dweeb you sometimes see crying all over the bus station at three a.m. on a Friday night, covered in sick and in no way should be placed in control of a musical instrument, if you could call it 'control'.

The Just Joans. Yes dude, we know you're Scottish, put it away. Replace whatever words this guy is talking (i would say singing, but he's quite clearly just talking like he's explaining something slowly to a confused foreigner, hence the exaggerated accent) with the phrases "two and two is four" and "the ball is orange" and you have the fucking homeless Proclaimers playing kid's songs in the library for loose change. Edutainment. Barney beware! Awful.

Quite simply the worst song i've ever heard in my life. Ironically, we find our man banging on about "redeeming features" when not one can be found amongst this uncontrollable explosion of sweaty afterbirth posing as songwriting. Manc_ill_Kid (hello again) clunks and grumbles his way through this sorry little number, confusedly battling the perfect little ditty inside his head with the incomprehensible pile of discordant pumps and groans coming out of it, pretending to play like he hasn't just been taught four chords by his boyfriend, introducing us all to the yawnsome concept that, yes, even the simplest, most talentless of mongoloids can make a fucking sound bang, a video, an upload and an html link to point unsuspecting music fans toward sickness. God bless you internets. "She won't be watching this". Haha, you figure? You've lost it mate. You're gone. But thanks for the laughs. See ya.

I was driving home from work and down Great Western Road, the car in front was the same type of car as mine, a wee red Smart car. So for about three blocks this car was in front. Then we came to the traffic lights just afore Kelvinbridge and it slipped into the left lane, about a yard from being abreast of me. The driver turns round waves, so I wave back, as is the nature of Smart Car driver.
Eventually the lights change, and she remains stationary as I pull off slowly, so we slowly pass each other, like ships in the night, smiling and waving, and she was the cutest Smart Car driver I've ever seen, this huge cheesy smile.

Last Night From Glasgow returns after, ooh how long was it since MJ Hibbett and that 100th show?

This week, all the way from East Kilbride we have St Deluxe, who brought their own lighting, and what cool lighting it is too.

Now Joe from The Great Money Trick suggested I invite them along and Rowan Plimpton mentioned them two, and it turns out they're great.

This first track, a Sebadoh cover, is pretty neat, I'd always written off Sebadoh as one of those dreary bands that Brian Civil Jar likes, but on hearing this, they could actually be quite good...

manc_ill_kid - Hundredth Webcast

Wow!! Its the 100th Last Night From Glasgow webcast show. Despite my requests none of the cities big-name acts were interested in playing a one-off special, so it was down to me and my guitar.

As with the fiftieth show, people seem to love me reading out lists of websites and giving props to specific people.

I think maybe I'm a little too gushing in it, and websites are quite shameless. How long until they realise that I've never posted on half of them. And are four mentions of Bowlie a few too many?

I'm having my doubts about the merits of finishing with a distorted cover, an the re-written lyrics neither make any sense in the song or in my life as it stands at the moment. Hmm, maybe I shout have done something about crushing waves of self-doubt. It seemed like such a good idea in the pub four weeks ago, and you know how there be magic in carrying these things through. It hasn't even been fifteen weeks, I think I counted it a thirteen, but well, I hadn't seen her for fifteen.

It took about seven takes over four days to get it as good as it is. I seem to work best under pressure, if you can call this 'the best'. Usually I cocked up on the song, but one of the guitar solos I recorded on Tuesday night was perfect, it'll go on the Christmas Out-takes DVD box-set. I think it was the seven takes that got me to remember all the bands who've been on.

Last night it was a matter of recording this just on my way out to the cinema (to see Marie Antonnette), then adding all the subtitles to the webcast after midnight when I got back.

I feel that maybe I should have emphasised the bands who've played on the show more than I did.

MJ Hibbett - The Lesson of the Smiths

Aw, this has got to be in my top three favourite MJ Hibbett songs. He played it last time I saw him in Glasgow and it was the most beautiful and profound song ever, and he hadn't recorded it or released on anything, so it was just this song that existed live.

It was only last year I got into the Smiths, I've always been into Take That since their final run of ten sell out shows at the Manchester Arena in '95 that I never went to.

Anyhoo, so I feel so, privileged(?) that he played it on Last Night From Glasgow tonight. Of course the song's on his latest album WE VALIDATE, available from the internet.

And perhaps this song's crowning glory, it was the last track uncle Steve played on his Lamacq Live show on Radio One. Kind of like Tindersticks for a new generation.

He's one of the nicest guys I've ever met, and the other day I was driving home from work, and I saw him wandering down the street in town, I almost shouted out of my car "Oi! Hibbett", but then I rememebred I don't really know him that well, and it could be a little scary.

Anyhoo, we got him to come through and record this song. And it was brilliant.

The video's a little dark, it looked okay on the screen on the back of the camera, but in real life, mmh. And I wasn't sure about having him sat down, cos usually he starts up to play gigs, I was pre-occupied with getting the camera propped against the wall securely.

I love this song, I remember back int he day hurtling round Worsley Woods with the 1st Worsley Scout Troup playing wide games, inevitably me and my mate Binny would get beaten up by the older scouts, like Kevin McGlin and Jimbo, and by the time we'd grown up enough to be older scouts ourselves, health and safety had put a stop to wide games.

So there we were, in the studio, somewhere in Glasgow's barren east end, in the catacombs of some ancient factory, Uncle Brendan spinning the sliders putting the final touches to The Plimptons's second album. and I thought hey ho, its been a while, but why not try to get the mighty Plimptons to record a Last Night From Glasgow thingi vodcast.

So here you have it.

Rowan's playing melodica, Neil didn't quite have a bass guitar handy so he plays the beer can and empty crisp packet. Marty's on guitar and Adam's wearing a mask.
It does take a few attempts to get going, and Neil did drop crisps into the guitar a few seconds in.

Off-camera for the most part to the right we have Brendan O'Hare and to the left MJ Hibbett.

I was a little worried that Ad's vocals would be obscured cos of the mask, but it seems okay until the last line or so.

For the third Mouse Eat Mouse video it was just the singing chap, CD Shady and Kate on cello, a rather stripped down number that reminds me of Jackanory.

Recording it was a bit tense, Martin Plimp was just soundsd the front door to the left having a fag, but I could hear him talking and I was worried it would come through on the audio. But even worse was when we started recording Adam Plimp was in the kitchen singing to himself. So we had to stop the video and get him to shut up.

He graciously did, but then locked himself in the bath room. So all though the video I'm thinking that any minute he's going to walk out accompanied with the sounds of flushing toilet.

We're back!!

This week its Mouse Eat Mouse, starting off with their epic Mair Licht.

I first heard it on the Is This Music? magazine cover CD. With me being English I don't quite understand all of it, but there are some important lessons about life in there.

There was a bit of concern about the damage being done to CD Shade's vocal chords, cos they did the song as a sound check too, but it came out tremendously.

And I was a bit concerned about how dark it was on the video, it all looked okay on the wee screen on the back of the camera. I guess I could get a bit of software to adjust the levels at a later date. We had to record this out in the hallway rather than in the usual webcast recording room just to get every one fitting in shot properly.

Adam J Smith

A rather short number, which we recorded in Adam's flat one rainy day. I think its on the Hector Collectors' Dollification EP, a 7" record available from Manchester's Stolenwine records, originally released back in March '04

Those days were perhaps the high point of the Hector Collectors career. There was this show in Manchester where several members of The Smiths turned up and we all eneded up at a party with them. It was jolly rock n roll.

For this webcast the camera does a rather neat auto-focus thing, but it means if you start recording close to the camera, everything appears blurred.

Images of Mathematicians on Postage Stamps - New Dawn Fades

This was a little bit of a break from the norm, we tried experiementing with lighting, I wanted to get the shadows or me and Robbie against the wall to look like there were four of us, but it didn't quite work, it still looks a little more eye-catching than other webcasts up until Scunner came along. Also out stance in the video, I wanted the keyboards to line up better than they did so visually it would look more arty, its cos of this that we didn't bother doing the usual introduction, just hit record and started.

The song was a kind of new one to me. Like I'd heard the Joy Division version many times, but when Robbie handed me the keyboard and told me just to keep playing the same loop all through, it took me a while to get it. And even then I couldn't play the song. I thought it was the Anton Corbjin one with the wee dudes in robes.

I think it took two takes to get right, and even then we didn't have much of a plan for the end of the song.

Images of Mathematicians on Postage Stamps started as just a cool band name, then Robbie started messing about with his Mac, I started creating spoof song titles over on AudioScrobbler and months later Robbie actually wrote the songs. Our first gig was back in January, Robbie had got the call from the Winchester Club that they needed a band, so he put it together. We had a trial run at the Tchai Ovna on a Thursday night, then our first proper gig two nights later in front of possibly a sell out audience at the Woodside Social Club.

The Last Night From Glasgow webcasts were the third ever live performance. The fourth is going to be at a birthday party, some nine months after the first.

Blitzhoney - America

This is one of the few political songs we've had on Last night From Glasgow. When the band recorded it, it did take a couple of attempts to get all the lyrics out.

I like the lines about how America's enemy's are at their gates, but are already inside, about the rotten heart of America I reckon. And missiles down Main Street is a nice image used several times.

When we recorded it that had a gig that evening at Bar Warhol, we were hoping it would somehow promote the gig, and it took a couple of rehearsals to get the 'finishing the song and running off thing' right at the end. I think Larry forgot about it, so it doesn't come across as too staged.

This is the only show in Blitzhoney's run of shows where Barry wears a hat, I bought it from Mr Bens.
